If you swear to try to dream about me,
I cannot wait to fall asleep tonight.
For, were meeting in dreams a guarantee,
I should never want to turn on my light. 

I see no reason to open my eyes
If closing them puts you into my view.
Because while awake, you must realize,
Any trifle takes my mind’s eye to you.

To kiss you, hold you, in my waking life…
It would render nightly dreams valueless!
But time—cruel!—preserves our romantic strife,
So, in love, in sleep, in dreams I profess… 

When, soon, our lips are each others’ to keep
Dreams will live awake, we’ll not need to sleep.
